THR Chairman's Corner

It is said that the rolling stone gathers no moss, and it is with this cliché in mind that THR looks to enter 2013 with a new mind set.  What’s old is new, and sometimes the best way to move forward is by taking a step backwards.  2013 will bring many changes for THR, and it is our hope that these changes strengthen the technological community in Hampton Roads.  Like many of you, I am not originally from this area, but I now proudly call Virginia Beach my home, and I strongly believe that our community can only benefit from a strong unified group, centered-around building and promoting technology based initiatives.

Before I go into some of the new initiatives we hope to incorporate, I would like to take a moment to touch on a few of the major changes that have taken place.  As of January 1st, 2013, I will be stepping up and fulfilling the role of Chairman for Technology Hampton Roads.  Lang Nguyen has been a pillar of strength for this organization and I only hope that I can accomplish half as much as she has over the past few years.  Steve Goad will remain Vice Chair and he will continue to educate and assist me in the execution of the day-to-day operations of THR.  Jarrett Early has stepped down as the president of THR to pursue an opportunity abroad, and Tim Early will be stepping up to fulfill the role of president.  Undoubtedly, if you’re reading this post, you’ve likely met with Jarrett at some point along the way; I don’t have to tell you what an upstanding and intelligent man he is and how greatly his presence will be missed throughout the THR community.

THR has been blazing trail since the day of its inception and is looking to continue this trend by refocusing on the impetus for the creation of technology councils – technology.   It is with this in mind that THR will once again take the lead and separate itself from the pack.  Our goal for the coming year is to put the technology back into Technology Hampton Roads by returning to our roots and reviving some of our more popular programs.

THR is going to refocus its efforts and begin catering to the engineers and educators within our community.  We are going to begin the “Host & Boast” initiative where the companies that make up our organization can host an event within their own facilities and bring in partners such as Cisco, Vmware, Microsoft, etc, to discuss relevant topics with our members.  We’re going to host STEM events focused solely on the teachers, having current teachers explain how they can implement STEM-based initiatives into their classroom. We’re also going to revive the CIO forum and get the top minds from local companies together to share lessons learned and best practices.  All of our efforts will be placed on giving the engineers and innovators within our community an incentive to join and participate in THR.

Our goal for 2013 is to bring more value to the members of our organization. THR will continue to be a place for networking amongst our peers and we will continue to support each of our members in all of their endeavors.  Thanks for your time and I look forward to seeing you all at our next event.
